< PreviousWASTE MANAGEMENT prevent contamination. Once waste is off site, this is not the end of a company’s responsibilities, especially as desire grows for the industry to have full knowledge of and involvement in disposal, and to incorporate more sustainable methods that turn away from air polluting incineration and landfill. This is seeing a need for disposal methods that reduce environmental impact, such as recycling or utilising concepts like energy from waste. In a recent instance embodying this, Synergie Environ supported Sterling Pharma Solutions with the installation of an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant at its Northumberland facilities to recycle waste solvents into low carbon gas which is injected into the national grid. There is also a responsibility to ensure consumers properly dispose of pharma products, including packaging, devices, and expired and used medications to avoid their entry into the environment. This may involve clear labelling on products to guide users on how and where to dispose of waste, such as returning unwanted medicines to pharmacies or recycling cardboard boxes and paper leaflets at curbside. To further promote more eco-friendly disposal of products with the consumer, there is the opportunity for drug producers to take the onus to design products and packaging that consider their end point by being designed to be biodegradable, easily recyclable, or reusable and to decrease the amount of packaging required. Creating greener packaging and products is a core focus for many firms, with countless trying to cut use of single use plastics, minimise the amount of plastic in devices and packaging, and redesigning items with more sustainable materials. This is no easy feat however, due to the complexity of some products. While the collaboration launched in Denmark looks to improve proper disposal of medical devices, a key challenge lies in altering public behaviour to return devices. With pharma businesses major producers of waste around the world and growing pressure for the industry to tackle its environmental footprint, adopting more responsible, sustainable waste management is essential.
