More information can only make it easier to identify a flawed product, and reduce time and money wasted in the long run. Legally there must be traceability information for any suppliers and business customers, known as one step back and one step forward. Retailers who supply pharmaceutical products must also adhere to this law, including proper labelling and health and identification marks, on packaging or directly on the item itself. But where traceability comes into play in the fight against counterfeit drugs is in enabling consumers and end-users to trace back a product and discover that it is counterfeit. QR codes (although these can be faked) and foil emblems can be used as means for consumers to scan products themselves and see where they have been made, how they have been registered, and to pick up on any inconsistencies. Counterfeiters can be said to be clever in the way they do work and how far they will go to deceive, but they are businesses like any other at the end of the day, and they will seek to take © stock.adobe.com/Peter Hermes Furian shortcuts and maximise profits. That means a counterfeiter will be far more likely to simply give up on one product and begin counterfeiting another if the first becomes too difficult. Similarly, the more complicated packaging, traceability systems and QR codes are, the less interested they will be in pouring money into ways to get around it. Of course, none of this will matter at all without good communication with consumers, who need to be informed of the dangers of counterfeit drugs and how – and why – they should check your packaging to confirm the product is real. This may mean reaching out in marketing and advertising material (legal within North America for instance, as opposed to much of the EU) to remind consumers to “check the label” or “pop the seal” or whatever other method a manufacturer uses to thwart counterfeiters and embrace traceability. Striking back against counterfeit drugs is not only necessary from a reputational, ethical and legal standpoint, but it’s also sound business sense. If your drugs are being counterfeited en masse then that is lost profit. Traceability should therefore be a priority concern for any business.
